Pediatric Residents/Locums

I am the wife of a pediatrician who is spending a year working in Iqaluit.  I have no affiliation with the Children's Hospital of Eastern Ontario, the Northern Ontario School of Medicine, Qikiqtani General Hospital, or any other institution.  This is a personal blog, and this page is a work in progress.

Starting a medical adventure in Iqaluit? Wondering what to expect?  Here is some info that might help you out.

Getting around town

A PDF map of the entire city can be found here, although you might not be able to make much sense of it until you arrive.  I have pulled out the downtown core, where you will be spending most of your time. Pediatric residents mostly live in one of two buildings, house # 5118 on the plateau, or building #609 (the bottom floor is Tittaq Office Supplies, by the post office).

The building circled in red is the Tittaq building, where most pediatric residents stay while in town. The hospital is circled in green.  The best shopping is circled in pink: NorthMart, Arctic Ventures (building 192), and for souvenirs nothing beats the museum for price (southernmost circle). If you want to catch a movie, the building circled in purple labeled "Frobisher Inn" is where you want to go.

While I didn't write this blog with medical staff in mind, you are more than welcome to check out links to various posts below.  I've selected the links you may find most useful, but feel free to read about our year in the north. Also, the blog posts are about our lives.  The link to the museum, for instance, is about when we had friends visiting. The post covers more than the museum, so you will need to peruse until you find the section you feel is most relevant. Also, as my blog is still a work in progress, so is this page. Not all restaurants have links yet, for example.

Shopping

  • Shopping part one and part two (these are the same links as above under "food")
